În citoplasma lor exista un cloroplast în formă de panglică spiralată. Vara, înmulțirea se face asexuat, prin diviziune tranversală, datorită căreia filamentul se alungește continuu. Spre toamnă, are loc înmulțirea sexuată. Astfel, două filamente de sex diferit (unul masculin și unul feminin) se apropie și emit un canal prin care conținutul unei celule se unește cu conținutul celeilalte. Rezultă o singură celulă, numită celula ou( zigot), care se desprinde și cade pe fundul apei. Primavara, ea va da naștere unei noi alge.
